Industry trends and perspectives for HCI research
Workshop Plans
To align with the previously outlined goals of the workshop, we structure the half-day event into three distinct sessions. Each session is designed to contribute towards achieving our workshop objectives: (1) identifying challenges and opportunities, and (2) drafting a roadmap for HCI research).
Presentation and Ice Breaker (30min)
We will open the event by introducing the goals of workshop, and explaining planned activities. To help kickstart ideation and collaboration, we will organise a quick icebreaker activity.
Session 1: Affinity Diagram (1h)
During this session, our focus will be on identifying trends within both HCI research and the industry, exploring their interrelationships, as well as potential challenges and opportunities. We propose to leverage the affinity diagram method as a tool to organise and visualise these ideas effectively. This method is common in design practices to generate ideas and frame problems (Lucero (2015)). Participants will engage by using paper, pens, and sticky notes to rapidly ideate and debate on the topic. Overall, the aim of the sessions in regards to our workshop goals is to map out the connections and gaps between industry trends and ongoing HCI research, leveraging the collective expertise of the participants for nuanced discussions.
Session 2: Poster Creation (1h)
Participants will be grouped based on their expertise and/or topic preferences. From insights gathered during the affinity diagram session, each group will collaborate to create a poster as an overview of identified challenges and opportunities within their respective research area/topic. We expect these posters to not only highlight the interrelationship between different HCI researh areas, but also propose potential synergies and a roadmap for future research endeavours.
Session 3: Poster Presentation and Discussion (1h)
In this session, participants will have the opportunity to present their posters to the larger group. This interactive discussion aims to foster further ex- changes and challenge ideas, allowing experts from diverse HCI backgrounds to compare visions and identify areas of convergence and/or divergence. We purposefully plan this session as informal and unstructured to encourage open dialogue and cross-pollination of ideas.
Conclusion and Wrap Up (30min)
Finally, the last session will be dedicated to summarising key insights and outcomes of the workshop. We will discuss the presented posters, address actionable takeaways and identifying potential avenues for future collaboration and research between participants. Post-workshop plans, including the pursuit of the identified research roadmap and opportunities for partnership, will also be explored to ensure continuity and impact beyond the workshop itself.
